Show Notes

  • During an emotional post-election day, Pam and Steph discuss how to maintain your creativity when you feel like things are just too much.

  • It can be helpful to tap back into your “why”—why do you write or create? What does it bring you? When life is at its hardest, creativity can be a powerful form of self-care.

  • We think creativity and connection are inextricably woven for many women. When we write in community, or connect through our words or art, it brings us closer to others, which is comforting and essential—not frivolous or pointless—during times of stress and crisis.

  • Creating is about more than writing or “making” something—it is a source of light, joy, reclamation, and even rebellion. “They can’t take your joy away from you.”

  • So how do we do this when we feel paralyzed by our circumstances? Start small, adjust your standards, and rethink both your goals and your methods. Think “minimum dose” and don’t forget our favorite motto: Perfection is the enemy of good.

  • We talk about creating outside the box by trying something new—have a dance party or take an improv class—and giving ourselves “pleasure vines” to grab by making sure we have something to look forward to that feels nourishing and fun.

  • To help get unstuck, give yourself a deadline or try creating in community. Finding a call for submissions to motivate you or a writing group or workshop to keep you accountable can get you back on track.

  • Speaking of, get on the ***interest list*** for our January Artist’s Way writing group! No commitment, but getting on the list will keep you in the loop and get you a discount if you decide to join us!
