In our second installment, we use Mo Breed’s 2023 LTYM Boulder story, “The Ultimate Immunity” as a vehicle for exploring components of a great story.
Mo nailed the “narrator as character” with vulnerability, details, generosity, self-deprecation, and optimism.
This essay presented a beautiful universal theme that was a perfect fit for LTYM Boulder because the relationship with the narrator’s mother was the vehicle for this message.
This story featured beautifully specific details and the perfect balance of showing and telling.
Mo uses scenes and setting really effectively to draw the listener into her story—she painted a clear picture of where she was and how she felt.
In general, the humor, intimate tone, and the narrator’s connection with the audience made this an absolute slam dunk of a LTYM story.
Pam pointed out that this story had a double arc (which I like to think of us a double rainbow), where there were two parallel stories unfolding together that connected perfectly at the end.
The ending of this piece is simply perfection, with a powerful “turn for home” and a message that was deeply resonant to the audience.
