In our third installment, we use Jenn Yee’s LTYM Boulder 2024 Holiday show story, “Holidays with Asians” as a vehicle for exploring components of a great story.
“The perfect narrative arc”—take notes on how beautifully constructed, structured, and paced this story is.
Jenn’s story uses beautiful elements of craft—a recurring construct to bookend the piece, sensory details, vivid scenes, and dialogue.
This story featured a clear universal takeaway woven into a unique story, showing the listener that even if they can’t relate to the narrator’s specific circumstances, there is a tangible, relatable theme.
Jenn’s narrative voice is clear and strong—she shows us her imperfections and vulnerability with humor and honesty. She demonstrates to the audience that she doesn’t take herself too seriously, which makes us trust her and feel invested in her experience.
This piece showcases a great balance of wide lens and zooming in, utilizing the voice of innocence to pull us into the moment, and the voice of experience to insert her wisdom as narrator.
This story starts strong with a clear hook letting us know exactly what the piece is about, and concluding with a poignant resolution that is relatable yet doesn’t feel like a cliche.
