Show notes
In our introductory episode of the Word to Your Mother Podcast, we talk about the qualities we are looking for in an audition piece for Listen to Your Mother.
Our checklist for a great submission starts with the basics: It has to be about motherhood, and your story must involve some sort of change or transformation..
Narrative arc separates an anecdote from a good audition piece: it must be a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
We discuss the importance of having a theme that is relatable and universal to a reader or audience member: no matter how unique your circumstance is, your story needs to make a connection that resonates with others.
What is this piece really about? The lighthouse of your story should guide your writing; a good essay has a clear inner story—how were you transformed?— and an outer story—the details, action or plot.
Following directions matters! Always adhere to word count or time guidelines, and make it clear that you are a team player who will be easy to work with.
We talk about the importance of vulnerability—audience members come to LTYM shows to feel seen and to connect with the stories. Make sure your story reveals your humanity and realness.
The “Don’t” List: don’t ignore the time limit, avoid rants, recognize the difference between a eulogy and a story, steer clear of cliched Hallmark endings, and remember it’s a reading, not a performance.
